Objectives
Kildare is one of the most rapidly growing counties in Ireland with a population increase of 38%, from 1996 to 2006. Such a growth in population has subsequently resulted in the expansion of a highly skilled and talented work force in the county. This workforce is a combination of the development of the young population and the inward migration of skilled employees from Dublin, other counties and overseas.
Kildare has been regarded as one of the best performing Irish counties in an economic sense over the last 15 years, however this growth has not been at pace with the rapid population growth and has therefore led to a massive increase in commuting, as more and more Kildare residents make the daily trip to work outside the county.
Almost 30,000 commuters pass through Co. Kildare to work every day. The majority of this commuting population consists of highly skilled individuals, more than 50% are Employers, Managers or Higher or Lower Professionals. More than two thirds of these commuters are aged under 40 years and many travel up to 3 hours a day to get to their place of work - in fact nearly 40% start their journey to work before 7am. More than 70% of these commuters travel to work by car. The daily toll of such commutes has been proven to dramatically affect both home and work life.
Kildare County Council has embarked on the production of a Skills register database for the following reasons:
- As a resource for employees to register their interest in working in Co. Kildare
- To give commuting people who would like to work in Kildare the opportunity to register their details.
- To facilitate companies who are considering locating their business or enterprise to Kildare with data outlining the availability of a skilled workforce in the county.
- To promote a better quality of life by reducing the need to commute
- To assist in the attraction of quality employers to the Kildare region
